Got the stove running in my office, it’s warmer than the house…

Looks bleak, but it's cosy inside

Forth.ie

Forth is an Irish news blog/website/magazine run by Jason Walsh. I met Jason (in the online sense) via Micro Mart and he’s just commissioned a short piece from me supporting engineering as a worthy profession. Read it here.

Cloudy

“I seriously believe that the people who brought us sub-prime loans all moved to promoting cloud computing.”

No, not me some bod on TechRepublic.

The thing no-one seems bothered to address is, bandwidth. I’ve tried Googledocs and Aviary (graphics apps online) and neither work sensibly here especially in the evenings or weekends. The web is great for file transfer and backup, Dropbox, UbuntuOne etc, but do I want to be writing a 2000 word piece on it when the screen display lags about 5 words behind my feeble typing speed? And then stop altogether when Llan’s teen population get home and fire up MySpace, Bebo, Facebook. and bring the network down to a crawl?

I’ve just started writing pieces for Suite 101. It’s a Canadian web magazine that pays a share of the Google ads income generated by a page to the writer of that page. Some people seem to make a fair bit of cash out of it. We’ll see.

First piece is here.

The long-awaited (by me at least) Home Plumbing book is out. Friends and relatives get a freebie, everyone else click the link!

Home Plumbing (book)

September 3, 2009 DIY, books Comments

The Home Plumbing book is due out in 4 days, this time I took most of the photos and drew the illustrations too. Linux and free software types will be pleased to hear it was written in OpenOffice, the photos were prepared using Gimp and the illustrations drawn in Inkscape.

Another week another page about progress on the office.

Actually the web site is about 2 weeks behind the project itself, now it’s weatherproof I’m working on the first-fix wiring, but you won’t be seeing pictures of that. Not a pretty site, or sight. Coming soon, plasterboard.

Just added another page.

Started making the outer door today, more later…

The Office, Progress Report

July 26, 2009 DIY Comments

I don’t blog as often as I probably should but I’ve just spent a couple of evenings adding new pages to the office building saga here.

I’ve got enough photos for another page or two, then we’ll have to build some more…
